Free RPG Day
We’re celebrating Free RPG Day next month and wanted to get the word out to you as soon as possible. In order to host a great day of gaming, we’re on the lookout for any GMs who would like to run a one-shot game at the event on Saturday, June 18th, so if you’ve got something you’d like to show off, give us a yell soon and we’ll get you a table and some players. We’ll also be doing our regular June GRPA session later in the month, so we’ve got lots of room.
For the fifth year running, summer heralds one of our favorite days of the year: Free RPG Day! If you’ve not heard of it nor seen it in action, it’s a total blast. The kind folks at Impressions Advertising have seen it fit to petition a huge number of role-playing publishers to create exclusive product to hand out to our local gaming community. We’re supporting it by holding one-shot, convention-style role-playing sessions in the store all day long, and you get to reap the rewards by running or playing and being a part of the festivities.

Game #1 – Horror in the Mists
Call of Cthulhu
GM – William Lee
In 1919, millionaire playboy Roger Carlyle lead an expedition into the dark heart of Kenya and was never seen again. His native guides and porters were found by local authorities to have been brutally and ritually murdered. Of Carlyle and his European colleagues, there was no trace. Six years later, your friend Jackson Elias – an internationally famed adventurer and writer – contacted you with an urgent telegram that he has found the whereabouts of the Carlyle Expedition. When you came to New York to meet your friend, however, you find him dead under mysterious and violent circumstances. Now it is up to you to finish what your friend had started, and discover the final fate of the Carlyle Expedition. Tracing the original foot steps of the expedition, your first stop is London. But this is no mere research trip. Here, in the heart of the British Empire and the pinnacle of Western civilization hides a terror as primal and ancient as any you will soon find in the wilds of Kenya. Shadowy voices whisper to you from the shrouding fog, “death and madness awaits…”
Horror in the Mists is a self-contained adventure based on the second episode of the classic Masks of Nyarlathotep campaign for Call of Cthulhu. Prior experience with Masks of Nyarlathotep is not required, and new players are more than welcome to jump in. The Call of Cthulhu system is very simple and easy to learn, so no prior experience with the game system is necessary. The game does involve depictions of graphic violence, and therefore may not be appropriate for younger players.
Game #2 – Perfect as a Portrait
Victoriana 2nd Ed.
GM – Walter Wrigglesworth & Mike O’Brien
Up there in the ‘igh reaches o’ London society, everythin’s a lie. Wealth, power, social standing, alliances and enmities, nothing’s what it seems. The rich an’ powerful build their lives around illusion as much as reality, but sooner or later, everyone reaches a point where truth wins out. Except one man. Dorian, ‘his name is, Dorian Grey, a newcomer to the rarified heights of the aristocracy o’ our fair city. No one knows who ‘e is, where ‘e came from, or what ‘is game is, but there are tales, whispers and rumours of dark deeds and darker designs. They say his soul’s as black as a Kilkenney coal mine, and there’s no telling what ‘e might have planned for London. Some even say ‘e’s immortal, having sold his soul to the down-below in order to further his own plans. All of the aristocracy’s on the edge about ‘im, as he flaunts their rules and plays their games, and its up to you, me darlin’ boys an’ girls, to tumble to where ‘e’s from, what ‘e’s doin’, and why. An’ remember, if all else fails, gutter-runners like us sometimes have to make the ‘ard choices, and if it comes to that, I fully expect you to kill ‘im and leave his body in the Thames. Good luck, ladies and gents, and may the Queen guide your minds, your steps, and, if necessary, your blades.
Victoriana is a version of Victorian England in 1866 with a steampunk twist, as well as fantastical elements such as ogres, elves, and magic. This game will see the players take on the role of gutter-runners: low class men and women who help themselves and others because no one else can, as they work to find a murderer preying on the weak and downtrodden – a murderer who may be from the highest part of London society. They will use magic, science, steam, and a fair amount of low cunning and high adventure in order to accomplish their goals, if they’re up to the task. The game’s system is very simple and requires no prior experience, running entirely on a simple d6 mechanic. The game involves mature themes as a matter of course, so please, no one under the age of 15. But if you’re up for a challenge in a fantastic world with an excellent system, come, bring your personality and your imagination and let the wicked, wonderful world of Victoriana do the rest.
Game #3 – Tide of Morning
