    Free RPG Day 2012

    The schedule is here! For the sixth year running, summer heralds one of our favorite days of the year: Free RPG Day. If you’ve ever been a part of our GRPA gaming events, you have a good idea of what Free RPG Day will be like. The list of games we’re hosting are below, and all you have to do is sign up. No previous experience is necessary, so it’s a great chance to try out a system you’ve been eyeing for a while. Once you’ve got a confirmed spot, show up on June 16th, take home some of the free product, and have a blast with the other gamers who will be here!

    The list of sponsors this year is impressive, including Wizards of the Coast, Catalyst Game Labs, John Brazer Enterprizes, Fantasy Flight, Goodman Games, Paizo, and a bunch more. Each of these publishers has created a special gaming book or item for the event, and they’re all free for you to enjoy.

    Lastly, we’re going to have a ton of great prizes to hand out in a FREE raffle open to all those who participate in the event. Make sure to get your ticket from your GM before things get going. Trust us: you won’t be sorry you did.

    Below is the official lineup of role-playing games scheduled for this year’s Free RPG Day on Saturday, June 16th. Have a look below, and if you’d like to join us for any of these sessions, please select a game in which you’d like to participate and either call or write us back with your name and selection. All games are free and will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis, and you’ll be responded to immediately with your status in the game.

    Free RPG Day 2012 – Saturday, June 16th 11-6pm

    Game #1 – Secrets and Seals
    Grymvaldenn (Beta System Playtest)

    3-5 Players
    GM – Bert Lechner

    It is the year 1426, of the second counting. Silvemus Falk II and Horace Malkos vie for the throne of the kingdom of Humanity. Winter approaches, and the Falernian raiders of the North are preparing their annual raid on the lands to the South. Rumors have begun to spread of ironclad ships bearing the sigils of the Council of Fourteen, the lords of the Undead, patrolling the coasts of the South. Into this arena steps your party, a band of misfits whose simple journey to Oakholm is destined to be turned aside by the winds of war.

    Grymvaldenn is a post apocalypse role-playing game with science-fiction and medieval fantasy elements that is currently in development. Set on an alien world two-thousand years after the apocalypse, the game is designed with customization in mind, with many elements of character creation, equipment, and combat being dependent on the player’s imagination. The campaign Secrets and Seals is intended to give a full sampling of features from Grymvaldenn, including combat, investigation, politics, and town management. While most of the content is in its final stages, feedback is welcome and may be included in later editions.


    Game #2 – Flyover, 1913 New York or Touring Rock Band

    2-4 Players
    GM – Yoshi Creelman

    The Fiasco RPG works off of playsets that establish the where and when of the story, as well as providing guidelines for player development and interaction. Three different playsets will be available to the group to choose from:

    Flyover is all about Middle America – hard-working agribusiness professionals, construction contractors, Mexican drug mules and the people who love them. It’s the God-and-country heartland, where high school football is the best bet for a Friday night date and everybody knows everybody. With corn and soybean fields stretching for miles in every direction, the endless sky punctuated only by enormous grain elevators, things can get a little squirrelly.

    1913 New York
    Modernity is at war with tradition, and automobiles uneasily share the roads with horse-drawn carriages. Change – sweeping, terrible change – is in the air, and all of Europe is about to be thrown under the bus, dragging the world down after it. But tonight? For now? Cars that can go forty miles an hour, women not ashamed to show off a little ankle, and as much opium as you care to smoke. In the dirty places labor is organizing, anarchists are murdering plutocrats, and children are going hungry. But it’s a pretty good world if you are on top of it, so find a way to get on top, fast…

    This playset draws heavily on real New York history, and includes an additional section of notes to provide more detail about some of the more colorful locations and organizations.

    Touring Rock Band
    It’s all about the music, man. It’s about becoming famous. It’s about the chicks, the drugs, the fans. It’s about burning bright and dying young, leaving behind a legend! Or maybe it’s about paying for the hotel room once the stupid legend has left the building. Touring Rock Band is an over-the-top collection of iconic rock and roll glories and unwholesome lunacy. It’s about golden gods rising to fame and falling back into addiction, stupidity and squalid failure.

    Fiasco is a GM-less RPG for 3-5 players, designed to be played in a few hours with six-sided dice and no preparation.  During a game you will engineer and play out stupid, disastrous situations, usually at the intersection of greed, fear, and lust.  It’s like making your own Coen brothers movie, in about the same amount of time it’d take to watch one.


    Game #3 – Absolute Zero
    In Flames

    3-4 Players
    GM – Mike O’Brien

    As your eyes start to focus and the fog fades from your mind, you hear an inhuman wheezing that almost sounds like laughing. “Easy, Loa. You’ve fallen quite hard.” Lifting your head at these dry words, pain flares across the front of your skull and you collapse back.

    “Where am I? Who are you?” is all you can croak out before your throat tightens.

    “I am Ghede and you, Loa, are in the Flame Worlds.” The creature rasps the last word in a tone the feels almost funereal. “You are here for your crimes and now you must atone.”

    In Flames is a sci-fi role-playing game in which players take on the role of exiled Loa. Once gods of mythical powers, these exiles have committed some atrocious crime in their home world of Understar and are sentenced to serve their time in the Flame Worlds. However, the world of mortality is one of crime, corruption, greed and despair. Your path to redemption with take you through the stars and across worlds like you’ve never seen. However, if you cannot find atonement, you will be forever imprisoned… In Flames.


    Game #4 – Keep on the Shadowfell (H1)
    Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition

    4-6 Players
    GM – Ross Sigworth

    The town of Winterhaven stands watch over a ruined keep that was once a bastion of good in the realm. This keep overlooks the Shadow Rift, a dark scar in the world that was once a gateway to the Shadowfell but has been dormant for many years. Now, an evil cleric of Orcus, Demon Lord of the Undead, seeks to re-open the gate, and the only thing standing in his way is a small yet determined band of heroes.

    Keep on the Shadowfell is the original Dungeons & Dragons 4th edition adventure and is designed for characters of levels 1–3. Jump in as a new player or go back in time to play the story that began the new edition of this iconic roleplaying game.


    Game #5 – Dawn of the Scarlet Sun

    4-6 Players
    GM – Joshua Archer

    The coastal city of Magnimar is no stranger to crime, yet recently, a series of murders has sent a chill through the early morning streets. Someone – or something – is stalking and killing worshipers of Sarenrae, the goddess of the sun. The city guard is prepared to ambush the murderer, but they need help—help of the kind that adventurers are so good at providing. What is the sinister truth behind these violent acts?

    Dawn of the Scarlet Sun is a Pathfinder RPG adventure for up to six 5th-level characters—such as the six iconic heroes provided. In addition, this adventure can be integrated into the Shattered Star Pathfinder Adventure Path, and uses the villains featured in the Pathfinder Battles Champions of Evil Encounter Pack.


    Game #6 – We Be Goblins!

    4 Players
    GM – Alex Young

    The Licktoad goblins of Brinestump Marsh have stumbled upon a great treasure: fireworks! Yet unfortunately for them, the tribe member responsible for the discovery has already been exiled for the abhorrent crime of writing (which every goblin knows steals words from your head). To remedy this situation, the Licktoads’ leader, His Mighty Girthness Chief Rendwattle Gutwad, has declared that the greatest heroes of the tribe must venture forth to retrieve the rest of the fireworks from a derelict ship stranded in the marsh. In order to prove themselves as the Licktoads’ bravest goblins, the PCs must complete a series of dangerous dares, from swallowing bull slugs and braving the dreaded Earbiter to dancing with Squealy Nord himself. Yet even once they’ve proven their mettle, the adventure is just beginning. For the ship in question is far from uninhabited, and Vorka the cannibal goblin would like nothing better than a few tasty visitors…

    We Be Goblins! is an adventure for 1st-level characters in which the PCs play a horde of malicious and murderous goblins, written for the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game and compatible with the 3.5 edition of the world’s oldest RPG. The adventure takes place outside the town of Sandpoint in the Pathfinder campaign setting, but can easily be adapted for any campaign world.
