    Free RPG Day 2015

    June 6, 2015

The schedule is here! For the ninth year running, summer heralds one of our favorite days of the year: Free RPG Day, where you can jump into a great game with other like-minded folks for some real adventure! The list of sessions we’re hosting is below, and all you have to do is sign up. No previous experience is necessary, so it’s a great chance to try out a system you’ve been eyeing for a while. Once you’ve got a confirmed spot, show up on June 20th, take home some of the free product, and have a blast with the other gamers who will be here!

The list of sponsors this year is impressive, including Catalyst Game Labs, Steve Jackson Games, Wyrd Miniatures, Troll Lord Games, Campaign Coins, Paizo, and a bunch more. Each of these publishers has created a special gaming book or item for the event, and they’re all free for you to enjoy. Really – they’ll be spread out on our counter for participants to leaf through and bring home.

Lastly, we’re going to have a ton of great prizes to hand out in a FREE raffle open to all those who participate in the event. Make sure to get your ticket from your GM before things get going. Trust us: you won’t be sorry you did.

Below is the official lineup of role-playing games scheduled for this year’s Free RPG Day on Saturday, June 20th. Have a look below, and if you’d like to join us for any of these sessions, please select a game in which you’d like to participate and either call or write us back with your name and selection. All games are free and will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis, and you’ll be responded to immediately with your status in the game.

    Free RPG Day 2015 – Saturday, June 20th 11-6pm

Game #1 – The Night Lands
    Dungeon World

    3-5 Players
    GM – Dale Horstman

No one knows where in time these Night Lands lie. Maybe it is as the Arcanum propagates, that we are at the long end of this world. Still, every day the dim, red sun rises and crosses the sky low on the horizon. And life is surely failing in all corners of the wastelands, but it is not for you nor I to philosophize on such things. We are people of action and if the world is to fall, we will grab what we can of it and make our kingdom here in the time that is left! So join me and take up arms, esoteric tomes of arcane knowledge, symbols of deaf gods, and whatever tools and means you can muster and set out with me across the dying sands to find our fortune. The ancient city of Avanka and its legendary treasures awaits!

The tone of this game is Sword & Sorcery Adventures on an Ancient, Dying World. We’ll start out this session with a quick mini-game from Vincent Baker’s Sundered Lands series to set our tone and do some initial world building.

    Game #2 – Lightning is God’s Laugh
    Through the Breach
    2-4 Players
    GM – Mike O’Brien

Whispers come to life in the shadows, and it wasn’t long before Austrian doctor Erik Wurmbraun earned the nickname “Dr. Worm-Brain.” It seemed that since his relocation to Malifaux the good doctor had grown quite fond of the intricacies of the human body. The oddness, however, was in his method of acquisition. So, after one too many desecrated graves, Dr. Wurmbraun found himself with a sizeable bounty on his head. And I’ll bet my last Guild Script that tonight, we’ll be the ones to nab it!

Through the Breach is a tabletop role-playing game set in Malifaux, a world where western, Gothic horror, and steampunk combine to give your worst nightmare a run for its money. This unique adaptation of the acclaimed miniatures game lets cards be the judge of fate, not dice. Players take on the role of Fated and, with control cards in hand, work against fate itself to forge their own destiny. Through the Breach may contain mature elements and is intended for experienced gamers.

Game #3 – Sailors on the Starless Sea
    Dungeon Crawl Classics
    3-5 Players
    GM – Paul Hamblin

You’re no hero. You’re an adventurer: a reaver, a cutpurse, a heathen-slayer, a tight-lipped warlock guarding long-dead secrets. You seek gold and glory, winning it with sword and spell, caked in the blood and filth of the weak, the dark, the demons, and the vanquished. There are treasures to be won deep underneath, and you shall have them.

Since time immemorial you and your people have toiled in the shadow of the cyclopean ruins. Of mysterious origins and the source of many a superstition, they have always been considered a secret best left unknown by the folk of your hamlet. But now something stirs beneath the crumbling blocks. Your fellow villagers are snatched from their beds and with no heroes to defend you, who will rise to stand against the encircling darkness? The secrets of Chaos are yours to unearth, but at what cost to sanity or soul? Delving beneath the crumbling ruins, the characters discover ancient crypts, a starless sea, and an ancient ziggurat, where death and treasure await in equal measure!

This adventure is a level-0 “funnel”, which is the character creation process of The Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG. Players will begin the session by rolling-up multiple 0-level characters and then pit them against deadly odds. The characters grow, survive, and if lucky, come out in the end and obtain level 1. The unlucky, weak, and feeble of mind will meet their ends in glorious and sometimes (mostly always) hilarious death.

Game #4 – The Sniffles of King Torg (All Hail King Torg!)
    Kobolds Ate My Baby!

    3-6 Players
    GM – Yoshi Creelman

It’s not your fault that Kobolds are gourmets. It’s not your fault that King Torg (All Hail King Torg!) is hungry. It’s not your fault that the tastiest thing a Kobold has ever eaten is sweet baby! And it’s definitely not your fault that Kobolds are the most incompetent, reckless, and accident-prone race to ever crawl out of a cave. But it is your problem…
King Torg (All Hail King Torg!) needs you – yes, you – to go out to the nearby human town and bring back the freshest, tastiest, plumpest human babies you can find, or the King will be eating you (and Kobolds are pretty darn tasty)!

This is a rules-light zany game. No prior knowledge needed (well, you, as a player, might need to know some English). There will be death, and lots of it. But don’t worry: just grab a new character sheet, make a few choices, and sit back down at the end of your initiative.

Game #5 – Return to Sender!
    Shadowrun 5th Ed.

    2-4 Players
    GM – Edwin Siegel

Irkvin Borlt is an ork on the make, a vice-president-level executive at Venus Microsystems, an A-level tech corp based in Seattle. Six months ago he hired some shadowrunners to extract and add to his team an executive named Fife Drummond from their rival Microdeck. Drummond had a reputation as a dynamic problem-solver, in what he thought would be a considerable coup that would raise his profile within the corp. The run went off six months ago without a hitch. Drummond became a Venus employee.

Unfortunately, Borlt’s due diligence was inadequate. Had he asked around more carefully, he would have found out that Drummond was a stuffed shirt; a thick-skinned martinet who was only effective because his subordinates completely ignored him (they were actually quite happy to see him gone, and made sure Microdeck didn’t make any waves about the extraction). Suddenly Borlt had an executive who had no idea how to manage anything dragging down the morale of everyone on his team, the performance of his division was struggling, and his fellow VP-level execs was starting to notice. Borlt has to get Drummond out as soon as possible, but he spent a lot of money and staked his reputation on bringing Drummond in, so he can’t just admit it was a mistake, fire Drummond, and move on. He has to get Drummond out in a way that looks like it was not connected to him and keeps Drummond away. He figures if he deposits Drummond back at Microdeck they’ll receive him with open arms…that’s where you come in, chummer.

Shadowrun is a a tabletop role-playing game where sci-fi cybernetics and bleeding edge technology mix with magic and fantasy creatures. Players take on the role of Shadowrunners; outside contractors (read: deniable assets) hired out to preform corporate espionage against their employer’s rival corporations, and even maybe occasionally make the world a better place for those stuck in neon-glow beneath the boot of the mega-corporations that practically rule the world. Shadowrun may contain mature elements. All skill levels are welcome.

Game #6 – The Beginning of the End
The End of the World: Zombie Apocalypse

    3-5 Players
    GM – Jake Wheaton

Life as we know it is changing dramatically. The dead no longer rest quietly in their graves, and it is up to you to ensure your survival. Play as a representation of yourself, with your own strengths and weaknesses as the group attempts to survive the zombie outbreak. Gather the basic necessities of survival, and then decide where you will spend the rest of your efforts. Will you gather other survivors and start a colony, hoard weapons and resources for a rainy day, or attempt to discover the cause of the zombie outbreak? The choice is yours!

We will start the session with character creation, and then move into the adventure from there. The system uses D6s of two different colours, so if you have some favorite dice you are welcome to bring them, but all you really need to bring is yourself.

Game #7 – The Harker Intrusion
    Night’s Black Agents

    3-6 Players
    GM – Andre Sisneros

Maybe you were a spy before you got burnt out or sold out. Maybe you were a criminal, or a mercenary. Or maybe you were trying to bring the secrets into the light – you might have been a journalist or researcher – before you delved too deep. Now you know too much to go back into the light. You know about the vampires. They exist. You know they are monsters and they have to be stopped. And they know about you.

Night’s Black Agents uses the Gumshoe system and creates a thriller game of spies vs. vampires. Think Bourne Identity if the Treadstone project was run by vampires. But you are a creature of the shadows yourself. You know how to fly under the radar. You have contacts all across Europe. You know where to go and who to talk to. And you have yourself. Good luck!
