    Gotta-Play Games Line-Up September 2016

    September 1, 2016

NOW ALSO ON THURSDAY EVENINGS FOR BOARD GAME NIGHTS!

Our Gotta-Play series is a regular spotlight on particular games that we think are exceptionally fun and that we believe everybody should try, whether brand-new or old classic. On most every Saturday afternoon and now on Thursday evenings we’ll have a game laid out on one of our tables, and we’ll be offering free demonstrations and a chance for you to give it a shot.

If you try it and find that you simply must have a copy, we’ll be offering a 10% discount on that title through the demo period. So it’s great way to build up your library of the very best games we have in the store – while saving a few bucks along the way!

Each month’s games will be announced at the end of the previous month, so make sure you check the calendar for all the latest info. We also try our best to post reviews for many of the Gotta-Play games that we host, and you can check out the archive of them here.

September’s Gotta-Play sessions are described below, and will be running on Saturday afternoons through the month @ 1-4 pm. The new line-up of Thursday evening demos will take place at our regular Board Game Nights @ 6-9 pm.

    Flick ‘Em Up
    Pretzel Games

The cities in the West are not the safest place to be. You can follow the scenarios or create your own – the choice is yours, cowboy!

    Gigamons
    Blue Orange Games

Enter a realm where magic reigns and the world’s elements are creatures with mythical abilities! On your turn, you will look at two of the face-down Elemons on the table, revealing them to all players. When you find a pair of Elemons, you will earn them and also invoke their unique special power, giving you an advantage for the rest of the game. Every three of the same Elemon you find, will summon the corresponding Gigamon to your side. And when you have three Gigamons, you win the game! Gigamons is a game artistically designed to engage the player’s imagination and carry them away to a new world.

    Code Master
    ThinkFun

Along the way, you use programming logic to navigate the Map. Think carefully; in each level, only one specific sequence of actions will lead to success. Thursday, September 15th
    Dead Last
    Smirk ‘n’ Dagger

Dead Last is a ‘social collusion’ game of shifting alliances, betrayals and murder for profit. There is no hidden traitor, as each of you is equally an ally and a betrayer at any given moment. Each round, you will conspire and then vote upon who to kill, in an effort to be the last player standing and collect gold. You MUST vote with the larger group just to stay alive, so alliances and gaining agreement on who will die is critical. Subtle communication – a glance, a nod, pointing a finger, flashing their targeting card, anything at all – is completely legal. But don’t tip off your target or they will ambush you instead!

    Saturday, September 17th
    Kenjin
    Iello

A merciless war is raging throughout feudal Japan, fueled by the hunger for power or the desire for peace of its great lords. As one of them, you must defend your territory from the enemy threatening your borders. Now it’s time to command you troops and read through your opponent’s strategy to take over the battlefield and prevail! Kenjin is a quick and subtle card game of bluffing and tactics. You share two random battlefields with each of the players next to you: one worth four points, the other worth six points. When all the cards have been played, each battlefield is won by the player with the highest sum of card values there.

    Thursday, September 22nd
    Via Appia
    Queen Games

Via Appia, the most famous road of the Roman Empire, is under construction. Be a part of this historic event and finish the road that connects Rome and Brindisi. Prove your intuition in the quarry to get the best stones. Whoever builds the most valuable sections and reaches the different cities early will be victorious and the most famous builder in all of Rome.

    Saturday, September 24th
    Quoridor
    Gigamic

Quoridor is a must among strategy games. Its rules are amazingly simple: just make it through the labyrinths your opponent creates to get to the other side. This game requires strategy and quick thinking for two players and offers a load of fun for four. Both occasional and expert players from around the world recognize the fun and exceptional strategic aspects of Quoridor.

    Thursday, September 29th
    Greed
    Queen Games

In the card game Greed, crime lords (the players) try to earn more money than anyone else through clever use of their cards. At the start of the game, each player receives a random hand of twelve cards from a deck of eighty. Players draft one card, pass the remaining cards left, draft a second card, pass again, draft a third card, pass again, then the game changes; players simultaneously choose and reveal a card, carrying out its effects, then they draft another card, pass the remaining cards, play again, and so on until ten “playing” rounds have passed, at which point the game ends and players tally their holdings.

    Saturday, October 1st
    Dragonwood
    Gamewright

Dare to enter Dragonwood! Deep in the heart of this mythical forest lurk angry ogres, giggling goblins, and even the famed and fearsome fire-breathers themselves! Collect sets of adventurer cards to earn dice, which you will use to roll against your foes. Stomp on some fire ants, shriek at a grumpy troll, or strike the menacing orange dragon with a magical silver sword. Choose your strategy carefully because the landscape of Dragonwood is ever-changing. Only the bravest will overcome the odds to emerge victorious!
