Our role-playing regulars surely already know about our two big events per month- Open RPG Night and GRPA. We’ve had some amazing game nights at the store, with an incredible community of like-minded gamers coming together to tell some great stories. We realize that perhaps this is not enough, so now that fall’s here, two of our intrepid employees are stepping up to offer some great gaming goodness on an easy-to-digest, once-monthly basis. Read on below for more, and let us know if you’d like to be a part of either!

Pathfinder Legacy of Fire Campaign
Nick is putting the finishing touches on his store campaign for the Pathfinder RPG – the Legacy of Fire Adventure Path. He’ll be holding one session per month on the second Monday of each month, our regular Open RPG Nights. Nick’s a great GM, so if you’re interested in checking out Pathfinder and joining the fun, give us a yell and we’ll set up a time to talk about characters. You can also follow what’s going on with Nick and the three other players so far on our forum. Under the Open RPG Night board, you’ll see the Legacy of Fire thread – jump on and say hi! The first session is slated for Monday, September 13th 6-11pm, so you’ve still got time to join in the fun.

D&D 4.0 Encounter Day
Due to great demand, Jordan has had his head in the newest D&D books for the past month, working on his typical memorization of pretty much every rule set in the store. He’s looking forward to hosting a once-a-month D&D 4.0 one-shot on Sundays. As with any of our events, we have a forum board with the details where you can chime in or sign up. His first Encounter session is set for Sunday, September 19th 12-5pm, and we’re accepting sign-ups now!

Oh, and to any GMs wishing to throw a story in the ring for this month’s GRPA event on Monday, September 27th, we’re accepting abstract submissions now. What have you got brewing?

Game #1 – Death in Luxor
Trail of Cthulhu
4 Players
GM – William Lee

In the age of the pharaohs, a great and unfathomable evil rose from the murky depths to cast its gibbous shadow over ancient Egypt. At the cost of his empire, Ramses III imprisoned a horror beneath the sands of Luxor, where it has slumbered ever since. In 1924, a team of visiting archeologists unearthed the last remaining testament of that ancient mystery only to unleash a terror from out of time. Now death stalks the dusty streets of Luxor and a new age of horror is at hand. Can your investigators succeed where the mightiest of pharaohs have failed? Or will they fall victim to Luxor’s secret past?

Trail of Cthulhu is a role-playing game of Lovecratian Horror based on Pelgrane Publishing’s GUMESHOE system and the mythos developed by Chaosium’s Call of Cthulhu game. The system is simple and easy to learn, so new players or veterans of the Chaosium system are welcome, as well as players who may already be familiar with Trail of Cthulhu. Death in Luxor is a classic era 1920s adventure made for the Call of Cthulhu system by Goodman Games. If you have already played through or read the adventure, it is not recommended that you play in this event. Also, Death in Luxor does contain some graphic violence, and would probably not be appropriate for younger players.

Game #2 – The Danger League
Danger Patrol
3-5 Players
GM – Dale Horstman

New Gotham is the star of the Empire, situated on the eastern coast of the colonies and built on the ashes of Old Gotham. From that smoke and destruction has arisen the world’s first truly modern city, and it happened in only a mere decade. Central gaslight illuminates her streets at night. The enormous and almost monstrous Steam Monorail elevated above her encircles the glistening towers and sky buildings of downtown and can be heard whistling throughout the night. All of this is brought together by the incredible Aether Network that enables information to move faster than any other place in the world. All of this would be enough to solidify New Gotham in the annals of history and world renown but there is one thing that has utterly captivated the imagination of people worldwide – The Danger League!: that famous club of renowned adventurers, scientists, explorers and other, stranger members. They keep New Gotham safe from the nefarious underworld forces that threaten to topple her incredible achievements. The chronicles of their adventures have been translated into languages across the world and read by millions. This very night something peculiar is stirring in New Gotham. Is it the work of the shadowy figure known only as Professor M and his World Crime Syndicate? Or possibly the mind twisting magic of the Deep Ones? Only the Danger League has any hope of uncovering the dastardly plot! Let us hope they can do so before whatever is stirring tears New Gotham apart!

The Danger League is a steam-punk hack of Danger Patrol by John Harper. Check out the Danger Patrol website for more information

Game #3 – Cakewalk
Warhammer Fantasy RPG 3rd Ed.
4 Players
GM – Andre Sisneros

Thorgrim’s Fists is the best mercenary company in the Empire. Everyone knows that when the Emperor needs something done that the Empire troops can’t do, he turns to the Fists. If a man can become a member of the Fists then he can consider himself a success. It is a prestigious group and membership doesn’t come easy. This is your big break. When the town of Eilhart was nearly wiped out last season by a massive raid of Beastmen, you and your friends proved yourselves in the defense of the town. Now, with the help of a recommendation from the captain of Eilhart, you have gotten a probationary assignment with the Fists. You are to escort a dignitary named Ando to the Bretonnian Capitol and return. What could be easier?

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay is the latest envisioning of the Warhammer universe put out by Fantasy Flight. This role-playing system keeps many of the features from the older versions that people loved such as the many career choices available instead of choosing a character class. In addition they introduce a whole set of innovations that are truly new to role-playing. Altogether it is a sleek, fast new role-playing system set in a fabulous world full of detailed background and texture.

Game #4 – Droskar’s Folly (Chapter 1, Page 5)
Pathfinder
5 Players
GM – Nick Lundback

After searching the Northern Forest, the group of adventurers have found the Dwarven ruins at the base of Droskar’s Crag. They must now search the structure for any clues as to how this location relates to the Angelic Scrolls found within the Crypt of the Everflame! However, it is likely that the Dwarven ruins are now home to new inhabitants as signs of kobolds and wolves are prevalent in the area….

This 2nd-level Adventure continues the GRPA/ORPG ongoing Pathfinder campaign that will see a cast of characters develop their own story through the manipulations of different players. As they progress, the plot of the story will be player-driven, though the same players may not be present each time. Through twists and turns, we will see the characters develop their skills and abilities while they explore the wide world of Golarion.

(If you wish to play in this game, please take a moment to read the GRPA/ORPG Patfinder Campaign Chronicle located in the GRPA Forum of the Gamescape North website. This chronicle tells the tale of our group and will provide you with the background information to understand the characters and the story.)

August GRPA Event: Monday, August 30th 6-11pm
Please call the store (415.457.8698) or (Email Us) to reserve a spot in any of the above games.

Though we don’t carry many non-game items in the store, we’ve been extremely proud to stock Oberon leather products for the past couple of years. We find they match the taste of the discriminating gamer and compliment our tradition of paper-and-pencil gaming with a variety of absolutely stunning products that can be used in a ton of ways. Oberon journals, organizers, and portfolios are hand-made locally in Santa Rosa, and their quality is unmatched. They last for decades, are completely refillable, and the paper inside is outstanding for watercolors, fountain pens, and calligraphy.

We’re about to do a restock order this coming week and wanted to get the word out to see if any of our customers would like anything served up for them. We offer the full range of products carried on the Oberon website, and you can pick your order up at Gamescape without any shipping charges. The deadline for the order will be Friday, August 20th at noon. In addition to special orders, we’ll be restocking our front case with some great new designs and products from the wizards at Oberon. Check out their new selection, and let us know what you’d like to get!

Firestorm is here again!

Throughout the end of July and into early fall, Gamescape North is again presenting a very special summer Flames of War campaign, and it’s open to all Late-War players of all army sizes. Raging battles will be fought over precious rail resources, important bridgeheads, and quaint Dutch townships. Army commanders will conspire under low light with their generals to devise the best and most efficient battle plans. And the spoils shall go to the victor – of which there can be only one. And did we mention the loot?

We’re taking a magnetic version of the Firestorm: Market Garden map board and hanging it on the wall to track progression in the campaign for all to see. Every player will choose an army and spend time with other commanders on their side, as well as their commanding general, plotting their turn’s movement and strategy. And we’ll be throwing down across the network of bridges and rivers of the Netherlands throughout four weekends in July and August. The more games that are played, the better your team will do, and all commanders really need to know are the basic Flames of War rules and some introductory campaign elements that will be explained on the first day. Specifics are below.

When: We’ll be playing the Bridge Too Far Campaign, which will have five turns over five weekends. It’s very low-commitment because we know everyone’s very busy with lots of things, and we want as many people to join as possible. To this end, we’ll be meeting on Saturdays: July 24th, August 7th, August 21st, September 4th, and September 18th. Game times will be between 12 noon and 6pm. Players need not attend every Campaign Turn, but the more you play, the better chance your side has of winning.

Organization: All Late-War armies are permitted, of almost any size. Because commanders (you) will be challenging other players, you get to mutually decide on a points value with the enemy. Some battles might be 1000-points and some could even be 3000-points, if time permits. This means you’ll want to bring a force with lots of pre-designed modularity so you can adapt to the agreed-upon points value. All army lists from FoW 2nd Edition Late-War books will allowed, as well as any Official .pdf lists from the Battlefront website. We’ll be checking all lists before the battles, so please check your composition carefully! There are provisions within the campaign rules for all nationalities, which means that everyone can play – even Eastern Front armies.

Hierarchy: Darren and Nick will be taking the coveted jobs of Army Generals – one for the Allies and one for the Axis. You’ll file in behind them and work as a council of war to determine the best course of action before every turn. They’ll be doing all the administrative work, but you can bet you’ll see them on the battlefield, as well. Your job, of course, is to destroy the enemy at any cost, and there a variety of ways in which you’ll be able to help your respective war effort.

Again, the first meeting will be Saturday, July 24th 12-6pm. We’ll gather in the back of the store and give a brief explanation of the campaign rules, which include the following themes: map movement, capturing territory and calculating victory points, formulating battle plans, lines of supply, Divisional Support (Firestorm troops), aircraft missions, and a few other relevant rules. Then we’re off to battle! We’ll have boards set up with easy modularity for different terrain types, and we’ll have a table to roll on of available scenarios. But don’t get mired in the organization – that’s what we’re here for. You just come and play.

Entry for five weeks of play will be a flat fee of $10. We will, indeed, have prizes for certain categories of commanders, including Best General, Best Sportsman, Best Painted, and some surprise categories at the end of the campaign. We think this is going to be an absolute blast, and we hope you’ll come join the fray! Please direct any questions to us below, and let us know ASAP if you plan on signing up. The recruitment sheet is on the counter in the store, and we can easily add your name if you intend to join. Hope to see you on July 24th!

GRPA – Monday, July 26th 6-11pm

Game #1 – Chain of Command
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Unisystem)
3-4 Players
GM – Adam Breindel

It’s late 2001, the iPod is the cool, and America has invaded Afghanistan. Your band of Bay Area white hats, which includes no less than a potential slayer and her Watcher, is based in – where else? – San Rafael. You’ve been keeping the lid on the supernatural fairly well and venturing into the City on occasion when you really feel up for a fight. But now you’ve received word that a serious crate-full of evil is arriving by ship. It’s so important this package not be delivered that the Buffster herself is making a visit from Sunnydale to help with the intercept. Only thing is, the shipment is coming in just a few hours and no one’s heard from the slayer. On top of that, the Watchers’ Council is taking your calls but won’t tell you any useful details, or what’s in the box. Time to do something. But what?

This adventure uses the original Buffy RPG core rules and an occasionally self-conscious TV/cinematic style. No knowledge of the rules or materials is necessary, but RPG experience and familiarity with the Buffy and Angel TV milieux will be very helpful.

Game #2 – The Gathering Dark
Scion (White Wolf)
4 Players
GM – Walter Wrigglesworth

The titans have fought the gods since time immemorial. The gods have always managed to hold on, beating back the legions of titanspawn and undead for an age. However, the gods, weakened by the loss of humanity’s faith in them, have been severed from the world, only able to communicate through messengers and dreams. These days, the presence of the gods is a rare thing indeed. But the war with the titans rages still, and now humanity has precious few champions. The task of defeating the legions of the titans falls now to the Scions, children of both gods and mortals, new recruits to a millennia-long war. Many die or are corrupted, but some few still manage to rise to the calling of their heritage, and take up arms to defend their world, and they are humanity’s last hope. They gather, forming bands and finding strongholds, and continue the war, all over the world, and sometimes in stranger, more mythic places. You are a member of one such band. Based in the deserts of Nevada, you have been blooded fighting giants, undead, and worse. Now, you have learned that the titan Erebus, avatar of Darkness, has escaped his prison and seeks to blot out the life from the entire western United States, starting in Nevada, in Sin City itself. You must fight, must take up the mantle of your power to battle his machinations. To do so, you will need power, allies, and resources. Only when you have these things can you face Erebus’ legions head-on, and hopefully drive him back across the sands. The only question is, do you have faith?

Scion is a White Wolf RPG that runs off of a similar system to the World of Darkness. It is based on several mythologies, drawing heavily from Greek and Norse legend, but also Voodoo, Japanese, Chinese, Irish, Hindu, Aztec, and Egyptian mythology. The characters are “Scions”, mortals who have a spark of the divine from a god amongst one of these pantheons. The adversaries are the titans, the superbeings from before the time of the gods, who are trying to destroy the gods, the various celestial worlds, and humanity itself. In this game, the objective is to collect the tools necessary to fight the titanspawn threat coming out of the desert, while defeating the various plots meant to keep the heroes from doing their duty. This is not meant to be a combat-heavy adventure, instead focusing on role-play, with many social and supernatural situations. That said, sometimes, all players must resort to violence, so it will probably not be entirely peaceful. All you need are a few d10s and an imagination. Knowledge of myth is not required, and new players are welcome. Scion (especially in Vegas!) deals with adult themes, so please, no players under the age of 14.

Game #3 – Journey to Blackfire Pass
Warhammer Fantasy RPG 3rd Ed.
4 Players
GM – Andre Sisneros

It has been too long since your friend and brother, Belkrum Thundrik, set out towards the distant hold of Karak Azul to present the king with a weapon to aid in the battle against the horrid greenskins. The Squatter King of the Orcs has committed intolerable humiliations against your fellow Dwarfs and now that Belkrum has gone missing, the depredations of the Orcs will continue unabated. If the honor of Karak Azul is to be restored and the Orcs put in their rightful place, you must take up Belkrum’s mission. Find your kin, find the secret weapon, and smash the Orcs!

In Journey to Blackfire Pass, you will take on the role of a party of adventurers on a rescue mission deep inside hostile territory, on whose shoulders rest the fate of a Dwarfish hold, fighting for survival against relentless enemies.

Game #4 – Murders on the Lampblack
Pathfinder
4 Players
GM – Zach Gilmour

You are members of the Storval Stairsmen – a group of mercenaries and adventures tasked by the lords of Magnimar to patrol the roads and waterways along the Lampblack river. The last year has seen an upswing in banditry, but more particularly – in murder. Broken carts and bodies alike have been found on road and river disfigured and strangely branded with the mark of a three-eyed beast spitting snakes from its maw. These unknown killers have been dubbed by many to be called Lamashtu’s Vipers. To make matters worse, not a week ago, three of the Stairsmen where found floating in the Lampblack bloated, broken, and branded. The fourth member of the patrol is still missing. Your captain’s orders are simple: find the murderers and bring them to justice. Alive is good, but dead will do.

This coming Saturday sees Gamescape’s first official tournament for the brand new Warhammer Fantasy 8th Edition! We’re wasting no time in inviting all fans of the game to join us for a day of pitched battles, whether you’ve read the new book or not. The format is thus: we’ll be running a standard, three-round tournament with 1500-pt armies using the new comp rules from 8th edition (at least 25% core models; no more than 25% for Lords, Heroes, & Rare; 50% Special). The 8th Edition .pdf updates are up on the GW website, so make sure your army list conforms to the new info. For those who don’t have a full army ready yet, we’ll also be running a 500-pt Team Mega-Battle. For this, you can bring just a couple of units and we’ll set up a huge table so you can play around with the new rules without sacrificing your good name or terrifying reputation. Either way, Gamescape’s got you covered!

Saturday, July 17th 12-6pm
Warhammer Fantasy 8th Ed. Tournament
The awesome new edition of Fantasy Battles!

The idea behind Gamescape’s Tournament Series sprang from wanting to provide our gamers with one set Saturday per month in which they could compete for cool prizes in a variety of games. To this end, we’ll be hosting a tournament each month with plenty of warning for people to prepare, practice, and read up on the rules to get ready. It’s a great chance for skilled and passionate players to show both their competence and gamesmanship, and also a cool environment to allow newer players to practice their chops as they work their way up to mastering their favorite sets of rules.

You can do this in a number of ways: either by calling the store, sending an e-mail, or by dropping into the store in-person. There are 40 spaces available, so be sure to reserve yours soon! Prizes will be given in the form of MTG 2011 booster packs, promo cards, and some other nifty prize support that we have in the store. We regret that we will not be admitting players after 12:00pm SHARP, provided that there is space left on the day of the event. Please arrive as early as you can.

The wait is over – the Dresden Files RPG is finally here! For those of you who have pre-ordered with us, your books are under the counter and ready for pick-up. We also have a pretty good stock of extras for late-comers, so you can get a hold of them even if you’re late on the draw. You’re supporting the independent RPG industry and you’re contributing to your local game store. And you’re showing the big guys that both types of media can exist in the same market without ostracizing the brick-and-mortar stores that do so much to promote gaming and gaming communities. It’s a win-win-win situation, and Evil Hat deserves a ton of praise for it.

Have look on the Evil Hat DFRPG page and see what they’ve got to offer. Pop in and buy something from us. We’ll hand you over a digital copy of any of their books you’ve purchased in .pdf on the media of your choice. This offer goes for the entire line of Evil Hat’s amazing RPGs, including Spirit of the Century, Don’t Rest Your Head, Swashbucklers of the 7 Skies, and more. You buy the book at Gamescape, and you also get the .pdf right then and there. We love this partnership, and we hope it’ll be the wave of the future as more publishers see the benefits both ways.

The schedule is here! For the fourth year running, summer heralds one of our favorite days of the year: Free RPG Day. If you’ve not heard of it nor seen it in action, it’s a total blast. The kind folks at Impressions Advertising have seen it fit to petition a huge number of role-playing publishers to create exclusive product to hand out to our local gaming community on Saturday, June 19th. We’re supporting it by holding one-shot, convention-style role-playing sessions in the store all day long, and you get to reap the rewards by playing and being a part of the festivities.

If you’ve ever been a part of our GRPA gaming events, you have a good idea of what Free RPG Day will be like. The list of games we’re hosting are below, and all you have to do is sign up. No previous experience is necessary, so it’s a great chance to try out a system you’ve been eyeing for a while. Once you’ve got a confirmed spot, show up on June 19th, take home some of the free product, and have a blast with the other gamers who will be here!

The list of sponsors this year is impressive, including Wizards of the Coast, White Wolf, Goodman Games, Fantasy Flight, Lone Wolf, Chessex, and a bunch more. Each of these publishers has created a special gaming book or item for the event, and they’re all free for you to enjoy. And while we can’t break out the goodies until the 19th, we can tell you that a couple of the highlights include an introductory adventure for the forthcoming D&D Dark Sun setting, a preview scenario for Warhammer 40K Deathwatch, and a unique Pathfinder adventure from Paizo. Cool stuff!

Click the link for the official lineup of role-playing games scheduled for this year’s Free RPG Day on Saturday, June 19th. Have a look below, and if you’d like to join us for any of these sessions, please select a game in which you’d like to participate and either call or write us back with your name and selection. All games are free and will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis, and you’ll be responded to immediately with your status in the game.

Game #1 – A Trail of Madness
Trail of Cthulhu
6 Players
GM – William Lee

The year is 1933. America is in the depth of the Great Depression. The gangsters of the Roaring 20s have lost their place on the front pages to bank robbers like John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, and Pretty Boy Floyd. The Bank of Arkham has been robbed by a gang of dangerous criminals from Boston. Hot on the bank robbers’ trail are the players - a group of determined agents of the newly re-organized Federal Bureau of Investigations. But the agents may find that their fast cars, big guns, and new, scientific investigation methods won’t be enough. The robbers have bitten off more than they could chew, and are now on the run with a dark and sinister shadow cast over them. As the agents chase their suspects through Lovecraft Country, they will find a trail of death, horror, and madness…

Game #2 – Caught Between the Courts
Dresden Files RPG
3-6 Players
GM – Walter Wrigglesworth

The City by the Bay has always been a bit of a madhouse. Forces both mortal and supernatural have always been drawn to San Francisco. The Red Court fights the Wardens, The Wardens battle the Sorcerers, the Sorcerers make deals with the Fallen, the Fallen dodge the Knights of the Cross, The White Court Preys on the mortals, the Black Court preys on everybody, and the Seelie and Unseelie Courts are usually Up To Something. Now, new players have come to town, and no one seems to have their measure. Calling themselves the Fomhar and Earrach, meaning Autumn and Winter courts of the Fae, the two new power bases have begun a campaign to get a hold of – or an alliance with – any part of the vast powers that are represented in San Francisco. Worse, they are at odds with each other, and each seems to have a plan. Now you, the agents of every power in the city – be it vampire, wizard, shapeshifter, faithful, faerie, or even pure mortal – have been called out to investigate the situation, get an idea of their game, and figure out what there is to do about it, or perhaps, with it. This is your city. This is your story. What side will you choose?

Dresden Files is a new game based on the FATE system, implemented in such games as Houses of the Blooded and Spirit of the Century. It is VERY light on mechanical rules and mathematics, preferring to let players and the GM craft a story using phrasing, imagery, snappy one-liners, and imagination to play the game, rather than a pile of dice and rules and modifiers. As it is a new system, the GM does not expect his players to be entirely comfortable with the system. Knowledge of the Dresden Files novels is helpful, but not required. New players are EXTREMELY welcome, as long as you bring an imagination! As this game involves mature themes and several levels of Machiavellian deception and treachery (read: faeries), please no immature players or players under the age of 13. This game may become an open RPG/GRPA event, in the form of a living Dresden Files world, should it meet with success and approval. If the GM does his job, this is ROLE-playing, not ROLL-playing. Welcome to the Twin Suns chapter of The Dresden Files!

Game #3 – Beneath Eilhart
Warhammer Fantasy RPG 3rd Ed.
4 Players
GM – Andre Sisneros

Life has always been tough in Eilhart. But it’s tough all over, what with Beastmen raids, cultists, and the occasional orc attack. So when little Gertie got herself stuck in an old well, that was little more than an annoyance. That is until her father got to the bottom of the well and discovered that she wasn’t there. A tunnel had been broken through the side of the well and Gertie was no where to be seen. Now you have joined with the best the town has to offer to go down and see what is in that tunnel and whether you can find Gertie. All the town will be waiting anxiously to see if you can save the little girl. Good luck!

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay is Fantasy Flight’s RPG offering in the dark world of Warhammer. In the latest edition of the game, they have brought many innovative features for game play that make the GM’s life easier and the story telling better. There are special dice that you use to drive the storytelling along and everything about the system is designed to let the players try whatever they want. This game made a big splash when it was released last year. For a taste of this great new role-playing system come and join us for an old-fashioned dungeon crawl on Free RPG Day!

Game #4 – Decline of Glory
Pathfinder
4-5 Players
GM – Nick Lundback

When the son of a famous Pathfinder gains control of his father’s holdings in Taldor, the Pathfinder Society decides to build a new lodge there as a base to explore the many ruins of that crumbling empire. Unfortunately, the Taldan Phalanx has its eye on the holdings and an ancient curse has turned many of the residents into the walking dead. Can you survive the tangled web of Taldor’s politics and fight off the echoes of the past or will you, too, see your glory decline?

This is a Pathfinder RPG Scenario for up to five 2nd-Level characters. It includes a good mix of role-playing and creative combat encounters. This will not be run as an official Pathfinder Society Scenario, but is being used as an introduction to the structure of Pathfinder Society Organized Play.
