The new Magic set is right around the corner, and we’ve got a trio of great events planned for the month at Gamescape. Whether you want to run some competition before the boosters hit the street or join your friends in ripping open packs on the release day, we’ve got you covered. Read on for details on all three events and how you can be a part of the fun.
MTG Innistrad Pre-Release Tournament – Sunday, Sept. 25th @ 12:00 Noon
Continuing our very fun and successful series of Magic events, Gamescape is pleased to be hosting another Magic: The Gathering Pre-Release spectacular! MTG Innistrad releases on Friday, Sept. 30th. Our Pre-Release will take place one week before then on Sunday, Sept. 25th at 12:00 noon. The format for this event will be a Sealed Tournament.
If you’re interested in attending the tournament, we ask that you please sign-up ahead of time, as we have limited space for the event. You can do this in a number of ways: either by calling the store, sending an e-mail, or by dropping into the store in-person. Please include your DCI number when you register. There are 40 spaces available, so be sure to reserve yours soon! We ask also that you please arrive to the tournament before 12:00 noon in order to pay your entry fee of $30.00. Included in your entry will be six MTG Innistrad booster packs. All registered entrants will also get a pre-release foil promo card (while supplies last) of Mayor of Avabruck.
The Sealed Tournament will consist of one flight of entrants with the goal of the event to be completed by 6pm. Prizes will be given in the form of MTG Innistrad booster packs, promo cards, and some other nifty prize support that we have in the store. We regret that we will not be admitting players after 12:00pm SHARP, provided that there is space left on the day of the event. Please arrive as early as you can.
MTG Innistrad Release Tournament – Fri, Sept. 30th @ 6pm
If you’re not able to make the Pre-Release, we’ll be holding another Release Tournament on the day that MTG Innistrad comes out. If you’re interested in attending, please arrive before 6:00pm to sign in and purchase your cards package under the same format as above. This Sealed Tournament will consist of four rounds of swiss pairing, with the goal of the tournament to be done by 10:30pm. Please sign up early to ensure a spot in the tournament.
MTG Innistrad Launch Party Booster Draft – Sat, Oct. 1st @ 1pm
Join us for our Innistrad Launch Party on the weekend after its release! There will be a booster draft at 1:00pm and casual play throughout the day. No matter what your play-style is, you’ll find some options for a good day spent with the new set.
Launch Party Booster Draft (1pm)
We’ll be organizing a Booster Draft tournament shortly after people arrive, preferably organized into 8-person pods. Entry will be $15 for three boosters (MTG Innistrad), with boosters given out as prizes according to placement, as well as foil promo cards also added in for extra swag!
Launch Party Open Dueling
Magic players also have the option to sign up for Open Dueling. Open Dueling is an informal and flexible format ideal for new or returning Magic players. Entry fee payment ($15) will entitle you to one Intro Pack, one Open Dueling Results Card, and one special foil promo card (while supplies last). After you complete five matches the organizer will reward you with one complementary Magic booster pack.
Special Box Discounts
As always, we’re offering 20% off the retail price on full boxes of MTG Innistrad if you’re in our Customer Rewards system or if you sign up for our program. The points that you accrue on the purchase will also be tallied on your account. Individual boosters will remain at the standard retail price of $3.99. In addition, WotC is offering a special foil promo card of Devil’s Play to anyone who purchases a full box of boosters from us.
Special Note: you’ll want to know that we have some old Magic sets in the counter case, including Weatherlight, Mirrodin, Darksteel, Fifth Dawn, Invasion, and Odyssey. We’re keeping our prices on them low, so grab some while you can!
August GRPA

This month, we have a very well-populated schedule for GRPA, with lots of variation in the theme and styles of games being presented. This line-up, combined with the fantastic RPG releases we have seen over the last few weeks, indicates a lively and energetic roleplaying community at Gamescape. There’s never been a better time to be a part of it!
To further help facilitate this burgeoning community is the announcement that Gamescape’s OpenRPG Nights have been expanded to encompass all Monday Nights (with the exception of the last one dedicated to GRPA). You can now bring your private games and campaign groups to the store and participate in weekly gatherings to enjoy our space and the company of others as you fell monsters and seek adventure. Our hope is that Gamescape’s Monday RPG Night becomes a magnet that helps to draw players and GMs together for greater and grander games.

Warhammer 40K ‘Ard Boyz

We’re excited to host this year’s incredibly fun Warhammer 40,000 ‘Ard Boyz Summer Qualifier Tournament at Gamescape! For those not familiar, The ‘Ard Boyz events are a series of three tournaments designed to find some of the best Warhammer 40K players in the nation and pit them against each other in the heat of battle. Painting and Composition are not scored at all, so it’s all about generalship and taking out your opponent’s troops. The first tournaments, the ‘Ard Boyz Qualifiers, will be held on August 14th, 2011, and Gamescape will be participating by opening up our play area to anyone who signs up ahead of time. The top three finishers in the tournament will be asked to attend a Regional ‘Ard Boyz Semifinal on September 17th, 2011. The top three placements there will be asked to attend the finals held on October 22nd, 2011.
Games Workshop have conveniently posted the complete tournament rules online, and we strongly suggest that you read them carefully before getting your army lists together – there’s lots of useful information there, including a checklist of what to bring to the tournament. If you’re interested in participating, you can get more info on our forums under the ‘Ard Boys thread. You may alternatively come into or call the store to put your name down on our list. We’ll have space for sixteen people, and we’re sure it’s going to fill up fast. This will be a free event!

You’ll Take the High Road…

The biggest event planned for this month is our collective farewell to Darren, a staple at Gamescape since 1995, and also a leader, a host, a partner, and a friend. For years, Darren has been the face and soul of Gamescape, but all things must change. Now he’s off to Scotland (again) to get lost in the halls of academia (again), and we’re going to send him off in style with a party in the store to ensure that he remembers us all! If Gamescape is special to you, then come join us on August 13th, anytime after 6pm. We’re going to party until the wee hours of the morn’, and it’s open to all who consider themselves friends of the store. This is a departure, but certainly not the end. Darren will continue to be involved with the store on the website, in the forums, and on Facebook (when it works). But for now we’re going to PARTY, and the entire Gamescape family hopes that you can join us!

With summer fully upon us, it is once again time to don our weapons and armor (or light jackets and gin & tonics) and do battle with the villains and monsters that ravage the lands abroad. Through skill and polyhedrals, will each player defeat their foe and bring their hero one step closer to their ultimate goal? Or will their dastardly enemies gain the upper hand and spell doom for all that is good in the world? Come create these endings for us!
